 | Officers of the Year honored |
Five local law enforcement officers were honored Friday by the Tifton Optimist Club with the Raymond B. Merritt Officer of the Year Awards as part of an annual observance of Respect for Law Week. The banquet was held at the Georgia Agrirama's Conference Center.
The club presents the awards in memory and honor of Merritt, who was a deputy with the Tift County Sheriff's Department in 1991 when he was killed as he and then-Sheriff Edd Walker responded to a domestic dispute.
"It's a good feeling to know my family gets larger and larger," said Merritt's widow, Sue Merritt, referring to the crowd of officers at the luncheon who represented the Tift County Sheriff's Office, the Tifton Police Department, the Georgia State Patrol Post 13, the ABAC Police Department and the Tift County Jail. The officers who received the recognition were chosen by their peers.

 | Moultrie students arrested |
Two 15-year-old boys were incarcerated for carrying guns to school Thursday morning. No one was injured, and the identities of the juveniles were not released.
Colquitt County High School officials searched the boys and found that each was in possession of a small caliber handgun. One gun, a .25-caliber, was non-operational but fully loaded while the other, a .380-caliber, wasn't loaded, Moultrie Police Department Investigator Seth Walters said.
The two are detained in the Regional Youth Detention Center and will appear before Juvenile Court Judge William McIntosh Friday, Walters said. They each face charges of possession of a firearm on school property, firearm possession by a person under the age of 18 and carrying a concealed weapon. Walters said he might pursue an additional charge of terroristic threats against one boy. Colquitt County Schools Superintendent Leonard McCoy said he is recommending expulsion of the students. As is policy, a school hearing will be held at a future date.
